Winners of the Compose a Prayer and Design a Bookmark competitions

Image of book cover of Moving On

To coincide with the publication of Moving On and the completion of the first four books in the Follow Me series, the Church of Ireland Board of Education ran two competitions for pupils in schools using the programme.

The winners have been announced and are listed below.

Compose a prayer

For pupils currently in either 1st or 2nd class. (P3 or P4).
This prayer may be used in the 3rd class book to be produced in May 2004 and will be published on the web site.  The prayer is to be original work, no more than 40 words in length and should be on the theme "Following Jesus".

Results
It was a very difficult decision to make, The judge was impressed with the standard of prayers.  She was looking for prayers written in the child’s OWN words, from the child’s own perspective.  Thank you to the teachers who encouraged their classes to take part.  It was decided to award a commended Certificate to a pupil from each school not placed in the prizes.

Overall Winner:
Elaine French (2nd class) - St. Fin Barre’s National School (Teacher: Bernadette Wright)

Dear Jesus,
Thank you for my brother and sister, help me to love them and care more for them and try not to fight with them.
Thank you Jesus for everyone and everything. Amen.

2nd prize:
Alex Young (1st class) - Springdale National School, Raheny (Teacher: Lesley Lynch)

Dear God,
Please help me to follow Jesus. Remind me to be friendly and to help others. Amen.

3rd prize:
Danny Strutt (2nd class) and John Burke (1st class) - Holy Trinity National School, Westport (Teacher: Mary Hegarty)

Thank you God for this new day
as I laugh, sing and play.
I will love you all the way.
I shall pray every day.
(Danny Strutt - 2nd class)
Following Jesus.
I will follow you Jesus day by day.
You keep me safe as I follow you.
(John Burke - 1st class)

Highly Commended:
Vicky Waller (2nd class) - Kilmore School, Farragh, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan (Teacher: Mrs Lindsay)

O God you are with me all day and all night.

Bless us O God. Amen.

Danielle Duffy (2nd class) - Kilternan Church of Ireland National School, Dublin (Teacher: Mrs Bennett)

Mostly when I'm sad
Or the things I have done that are bad.

Even when I be a pest. Amen.

Following Jesus.
O Lord, help us to love you and others too.
Help us to care for everyone especially mothers, fathers and you.
Can you help us to keep our friendship forever and ever?
Help everyone to be friends forever. Amen.

Jonathan Earle (2nd class) - Kilnamanagh National School, Oulart, Co. Wexford (Teacher: Mrs Hatton)

I love God because he is the father of the world and he made me and everyone else and he made sheep.

Design a bookmark

For pupils currently in Infants, 1st or 2nd class (P1-4).
We intend to publish a bookmark to advertise this website www.followme-series.org.  The winning entry will be used as a basis for a design that will be distributed to all schools using the Follow Me programme.
The design on the bookmark is to be in one colour only and must include the web address: www.followme-series.org
The bookmark is to be not more than 21cm long and 10cm wide.  Remember that bookmarks have two sides.

Results
Once again it was a very difficult decision for the judge. Many children ruled themselves out of contention for prizes by overuse of colours.  Simplicity of design and clarity of the web address were important criteria in selecting winners.

Overall Winner:
Peter Fitzgerald (Junior Infants) - Rathgar National School, Dublin (Teacher: Christine Ferguson)

(This bookmark will need to have the colours enriched for printing and the judge also recommends adding the Follow Me logo (from the books) to the picture side to fill some of the white area.)
