Moving On

Moving On is now with the printer. The books will be available to order from May 2003 and order forms will be sent to schools at that time.  Thanks are expressed to the forty schools that participated in the pilot project last October.  The comments of the teachers were very helpful in preparing the lessons for the book.

The Advisory Group of teachers – Carolyn Good, (Timolin NS), Ivan Dungan (St. Iberius NS Wexford), Ruth Gentleman (St. Andrew’s NS, Bray) and Norma Crowley (St. Luke’s NS, Douglas) have been of great assistance and support to the Editor as the lessons were finalised.

Moving On follows on from the work begun in Stepping Out.  It includes further lessons on the life of Jesus, the Old Testament characters of Samuel, Saul and David and creates further links with the major festivals of the Church’s Year e.g. Harvest, Christmas and Easter.  As before, there is a strong emphasis on worship in the programme and many songs and prayers are included throughout the book.  Services are included which could be used in a church setting or as a school or class Assembly.  Teacher’s Clues are provided to help the teacher in his/her work by supplying background information to the Bible material.

The pupils’ textbook contains lively colour pictures, expertly drawn by the illustrator Jeanette Dunne.  These pictures illustrate the stories told in Moving On.  It is hoped that these books will be kept in the children’s schoolbags and will provide a link for Religious Education between school and home.  Parents will be encouraged to look at the pictures, to discuss the stories and pray the prayers with their children.

There are worksheets provided in the Teacher’s Book.  These worksheets reflect the range of abilities found in 1st and 2nd class but may also be used in multi-grade classes that include older classes with 2nd. The worksheets provide activities ranging from simple colouring to word searches and code breakers.  The worksheets may be photocopied for classroom use.

The Church Education Society has kindly agreed to make a gift of one copy of the teacher’s book to each school under the patronage of the three sponsoring churches. These will be sent out with individual school orders.
