Lesson 19
Virtual visits of churches are becoming popular.

Check for your local church on the Church of Ireland website Ireland.anglican.org as many churches have photographs. Cathedrals such as http://www.cathedral.cork.anglican.org (St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral) have extensive websites. Check for your diocesan cathedral. A full list of cathedral web site addresses is available in the SteppingOut resources.

What the children will learn about God

Developing the strand objectives further, the following is a brief synopsis of the theological concepts  relating to God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit which the children encounter through stories, poems, activities and prayers in the Moving On programme. The concepts are not listed in any specific order.

God as Father
• listens to our prayers
• is worthy of praise through songs, prayers and worship
• loves us as members of his family
• enjoys our friendship
• forgives us when we do wrong
• blesses us and looks after us
• should be loved with all our heart, soul and mind
• loves us like a father (parent)
• created the world
• is involved with his people throughout the stories in the Bible and still is involved with us today
• is always there for us to trust
• keeps his promises
• is glorious and majestic
• can be described as like a shepherd, a fortress, a protector and a king
• says he will never leave us
• spoke to Samuel and still speaks to us
• looks at people on the inside
• chose and chooses people to do his work
• sent Jesus his Son to show us how much he loves us and to teach us how to love others
• raised Jesus from the dead
• promises eternal life to all who believe

God as Son - Jesus Christ
• is the Son of God
• was born in Bethlehem
• grew up, lived and ministered within a Jewish culture
• read the Hebrew Scriptures
• taught his disciples about the good news of the Kingdom of God
• worshipped and prayed to God
• inspired people to be his followers, both in his lifetime and throughout history
• told stories (parables)
• healed people
• shared bread with people
• made friends with people including children in a special way
• offers friendship to us today
• shows us the way to live our lives
• is like a cornerstone – the most important person, holding us together
• was crucified and died for us
• was raised from the dead by God, appeared to his disciples and through the Holy Spirit is with us
• ascended into heaven
• told his followers he was going to prepare a place for them in heaven
• is worthy of praise through songs, prayers and worship in church
• is with us in baptism
• is with us at Holy Communion

God as Holy Spirit
• came like wind and fire to the disciples on the Day of Pentecost
• is with us, helping us as Jesus helped the people when he was on earth
• is invisible yet is with us
• guides us today and helps us to live as God wants us to
• is worthy of praise through songs, prayers and worship in church
• is with us in baptism
